From the utility connection to your first breaker

Overhead drops, underground laterals, mast replacements and meter relocations for homes that outgrew a service installed decades ago.

Overhead Service Upgrades

New mast, weatherhead, service conductors and meter base coordinated with the utility drop.

Underground Services

Trenching, conduit, pull boxes and laterals for new services or converting an aging overhead drop.

Amperage Increases

Moving the meter and service entrance for additions, siding work, garages and clearance corrections.

Grounding & Bonding

Ground rods, water and gas bonding and intersystem bonding brought to current code as part of the upgrade.

Utility & AHJ Handling

Applications, load letters, disconnect scheduling and final inspection managed by us, not by you.

How a service upgrade runs

A service upgrade has three parties on the schedule: us, the city and Rocky Mountain Power. Managing that sequence is most of the job.

  1. 1
    Site survey and load letter

We verify clearances, drop location, existing conductor size and grounding, then submit the load information the utility needs.

  2. 2
    Permitting

Permit pulled with the correct Salt Lake City jurisdiction and inspection scheduled for you.

  3. 3
    Install and cutover

New service equipment set, conductors pulled, and the change-out done in one planned outage window.

  4. 4
    Inspection and reconnect

AHJ final, meter release, and the utility reconnects. We stay until power is verified at the panel.

Service Upgrades FAQs

Service upgrade questions

What is the difference between a panel upgrade and a service upgrade?+

A panel upgrade replaces the load center inside. A service upgrade replaces the equipment that brings power to it: conductors, mast, meter base and often the grounding system. If you need more total amperage, you need the service upgrade.

How long does a service upgrade take in Utah?+

Field work is typically one to two days, but the calendar is driven by permitting and the utility's disconnect and reconnect schedule. Two to four weeks from signed proposal to energized is normal, and we tell you where you sit in that window.

Do I need a service upgrade to add an EV charger?+

Usually not. Load management or a panel change is often enough. We run the load calculation first, and only recommend the service upgrade when the math actually requires it.

Who pays for the utility's portion?+

Rocky Mountain Power owns the drop or the lateral to the meter. Their charges depend on the location and whether the connection changes. We identify those costs during the survey so there are no surprises.

Can you convert my overhead service to underground?+

Yes, where the utility allows it. It involves trenching, conduit and a new service entrance, and the utility sets the connection requirements. We scope it with them before quoting.
